Colleges to encourage school leavers into apprenticeships

Why is it so important for colleges to encourage school leavers into apprenticeships?

During the most recent economic downturn to affect us (thanks Covid-19) we have been unfortunate to see many professional job sectors hammered, however the Construction Industry has remained relatively unscathed, many businesses actually reporting growth!

The Construction Industry has proven itself as ‘essential’, but due to dwindling numbers of young people entering the work force we are seeing a serious lack of skills shortage and an ageing workforce.

The housing market is one of the fastest growing UK sectors, the cornerstone of our infrastructure, skilled Construction workers are in high demand and will continue to be so for the foreseeable, attracting new talent into the industry is business critical, therefore it is crucial to encourage and support more young people into the trades.

Local college’s in our area are doing a cracking job at offering a variety of trade courses and apprenticeships helping to up skill school leavers;

Bridgwater and Taunton college is the largest provider of apprenticeships in Somerset.

The college based in Bridgwater encourages trades such as;

  • Bricklaying
  • Carpentry
  • Dry lining
  • Electrician Installation
  • Painting and Decorating
  • Plumbing
  • Ground Works
  • Steel Fixer

Yeovil College is also doing their bit in providing essential Construction based learning opportunities such as;

  • Furniture Manufacture
  • Property Maintenance
  • Bricklaying
  • Architectural Joinery
  • Site Carpentry
  • Electrical Installation
  • Plumbing

Encouraging our young school leavers to join the Construction Industry has never been so vital. Post-Brexit, high level technically skilled people will be needed now more than ever, we should be advocating apprenticeships as vocally as we praise the college-bound.

The opportunities for a long term career are practically endless, with the demand for most trades being consistently high, the work is well-paid and plentiful!

If we want to keep skilled workers in Construction, it starts at the very beginning.

Here at Wick Hollow we work tirelessly to support businesses and help people find work.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us, and hopefully we can help!
